经过30多年的准备和琢磨，斯拉法于1960年出版了《用商品生产商品：经济理论批判绪论》一书。斯拉法探究的问题是没有生产规模的变动或生产要素中的比例的变动的经济体系的特征，认为国民纯产品就是超过补偿生产资料所需要的产品的“剩余”，把生产看作是同样的商品既表现为生产资料、又表现为最终产品的一种“循环的过程”。这种研究方法正是复兴了古典学派的思想，所以，他时常被称为“新李嘉图主义者”。
